A Putnam County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit was dispatched to a stretch of the parkway in East Fishkill shortly after 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, following reports of a single-vehicle accident, where the driver fled his 2002 Lexus in a ditch in the northbound lane.

Police said that during their investigation, state police troopers spotted a man, later identified as Fishkill resident Mark Anthony Cahill, 30, who was fleeing across both lanes of the parkway, crossing over the southbound lanes into the woods on foot. Troopers gave chase, but lost sight of the suspect near the intersection of Hortontown Heights Road and Hortontown Road.

After losing sight of Cahill, Putnam County Sheriff’s K-9 Deputy Vincent Dallo and his partner, Lex, began searching the area, tracking Cahill along power lines for approximately a mile before stopping at a private residence, which had two occupants, including Cahill.

According to police, after Lex tracked his footsteps, Cahill attempted to hide himself unsuccessfully inside one of two vehicles outside the residence. He was then apprehended without further incident.

Cahill was arrested and state police charged him with driving while intoxicated and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. He has since been released and is due back in court later this year to answer the charges.
